So today was fairly decent. I started off the day by doing the press clips. That was a tad bit intense, but I made it through it. Then I went to a hearing on the T-Mobile and AT&T merger. Based upon what I heard, I am totally against it. T-Mobile, which I am a customer of, will have to jack up their prices once they merge. And a lot of jobs will be lost. Funny enough, this presentation was brought to us by Sprint. Did you know T-Mobile was the first company to come out with texting? Then the rest of the day, I worked on faxes in CapCor.
I'd say the most thrilling and boring part of my day was going to the Apple store. My computer has been showing me the blue screen of death recently, so I decided to take in in, just in case it wanted to die on me. So they first fixed the problem I had been having with iPhoto. It would say I had photos to import, but in reality I didn't.
But the best part of my day was when they updated my computer to the newest software for free! So now I have snow leopard, which means I can update to Lion when it comes out. I used to have the version prior to snow leopard. I'm glad the Apple store buy was nice. So now I have the mac apple store, which means I can buy software updates there. I really want to get the new iMovie software update. Besides the fact it took a while, it was totally worth it! :)

U.S. Marine Band
So today we didn't do much. Just had class and then we were supposed to go to museums after one of my friends went to a meeting. But she got back too late so we didn't go. But I actually got a 2 1/2 hour nap, which was really nice. But then after I woke up from my nap, we went to see the U.S. Marine Band play. It was really cool because they played songs from Wicked and picked one of my friends to sing to.

General Colin Powell and Arlington Cemetery
Today I got to see this guy speak.
General Colin Powell. He is such an amazing person and is really, really funny. There were a ton of interns there. We left so we'd be 45 minutes early. Once we got there, the halls of the capitol were packed. This has happened to me twice before for these intern series lectures and twice I wasn't able to get in because they ran out of spaces. But this time, we made it in! I was sitting up in the gallery, so I had a nice view. They don't allow cameras or cell phones in there though. Some interns got to sit on the House floor, which I am majorly jealous of. I'm just glad though that I got to see him speak.
Colin Powell spoke about his life. He actually had a 2.3ish GPA in college, except for in ROTC, so they said he should go into the military since he was good at that. The most important thing that I think he said was that, it's not what you do and who you are in college, it's what you become. He told stories about New York and stories about how he really isn't anyone famous anymore, since he no longer is the Secretary of State. He was really funny, which was surprising.
He also took questions at the end, which was rather cool. Sadly since I wasn't on the House floor, he didn't take any questions from the gallery. But I learned a lot from him. It was really cool to see someone who I had seen on TV, speak in person.
Then after work, where I worked on updating press contact lists and a social media project another intern and I are working on, I went to Arlington Cemetery. One friend here had recommended going to the Sunset Parade at Arlington, which is on Tuesdays at 7pm. I am so glad we went. Here are some highlight pictures I took.
It was incredible. They had the Marine band play. They played Pirates of the Caribbean play at one point, which was really cool. They also had the silent guard, who does all these tricks with guns. It was amazing that they all do it in sync and no one drops anything. It was incredible. I really loved it. And that was my day :)

Old Town
Since I don't really have much time to blog, I am going to put my weekend in pictures. So Sunday we went to the mall. It was really nice since I got some really cheap tank tops to put under my suits. Then we went to Old Town in Virginia. It was a lot of fun. We walked to the water and then played some frisbee. It was really nice.

So today for my internship, I got to work on updating the media contact list. Congress isn't in session this week, so everything is kind of chill. I also got to go to a briefing on FourSquare, which is an app that connects to Facebook and Twitter that they are trying to get members in Congress to join. It was rather informative. But overall, it was a rather slow day. Enjoyable, yet slow.

Holocaust Museum
On Thursday night and basically all day Friday and Saturday, I attended the "What You Do Matters: A leadership summit on propaganda, hate speech and civic engagement." Sadly since I don't have very much time to blog today, I am going to give you the highlights.
What I have learned:

-You should ask people that are different than you questions
-Indifference is key to propaganda
-There is nothing spontaneous about genocide.

Capitol Tour Training and Holocaust Museum
Today has been mega loaded with information.
First, I got Capitol Tour Training. Essentially, I learn how to take constituents on tours of the capitol. It was mega awesome. We first went on a tour of the capitol, which was way more detailed then the tour we went on for class. We got to see the Old Supreme Court room, the Old Senate room and it was way cool, minus the fact I didn't have my camera. I'm glad we made it on time because I was running late this morning a tad bit, since I needed to get my confirmation form in the office. I learned a lot from that tour. Then we learned about people with disabilities and gave a section of the tour to the rest of the people at this training.
From there, Holocaust Museum. I am going to sum up the past two days of the holocaust museum. It is intense. I would recommend going. Like, no joke. Although this three days session is very intensive, I have learned a lot. I will write more latter, but I have to go start a paper so I can go have some type of life this weekend, aka Sunday.

Wednesdays are the best days pt. 2
Today we had our first "real" class for our American Government and Politics. We had an awesome speaker who came in and simulated the federal budget. The budget simulation wasn't too exciting. Like the real government, we only got a little bit passed. Our of the 8 things we had to go through, in order to balance the budget, we only ended up voting on 3 of them. We discussed them a lot and tended to go off on side tangents. Then our speaker came in. Al Swift. He was totally cool. He was a broadcaster and then was on Congress for a long time. He was pretty funny and I really liked having him as a speaker.
Fun fact...I almost missed class because I turned off my alarms in my sleep. Luckily one of my roommates woke me up at 9:30 for our 10am class.
Then after class, basically half our class went to Angelico, which is this great Italian place. It's semi expensive, with meals about $10, but that's basically what you spend in DC for meals. But before we got there, we found the pink truck!! It's this truck that drives around and sells cupcakes out of the back. You have to like hunt it down on twitter and everyone talks about it all the time. It was just sitting outside the metro which was totally cool.
After that, about half of our half a class decided to go to the Holocaust museum. So we went there but they were all out of tickets, which means we couldn't get in. But it's okay because I'm going there tomorrow for my summit. So we decided to go to the Natural History museum, which I went to before two Wednesdays again. But I got to see the dinosaurs and the rest of what I wasn't able to see the first time. I was the smart person who didn't bring their real camera...so it's just iPod pictures now.
Then we decided to split up, the group, since half of us were going to the Nationals baseball game and the other half wasn't. We went to the Freer Art Gallery.
This is by Whistler, who does nocturnes. We learned about him in art class.
And finally, the Nationals game!! They won 2-1, in case you care. It was mega fun. And the tickets were $5, since students get 50% off tickets at Nationals games.

This witty, yet inoffensive title will draw you in to reading this
Yes. The title speaks for itself. I am at my internship and really don't have much to do. So I am catching up on my blog. CapCor is at zero, there was only one letter to fold, and no interesting briefings are going on.
Here is an update on the Fast and Furious briefing I went to last week.

So yesterday, despite having a rather terrible cold and not wanting to go, turned out to be worth it. First, I learned how to do the press clips for when our press person is gone all next week. It's just all the articles from the various local papers that we think the Congressman would find interesting. It's not a huge deal learning how to do it, but it is rather fascinating to learn.
Then I went to the Whip meeting. Basically it's where the White House, Senate, and House and all the subcommitees have representatives who all come in to talk about what is going on that week on Capitol Hill. That was rather cool. I love going to things and shadowing other people's jobs, so I enjoyed that. We got to go to the Capitol and I absolutely loved it. I get to go behind all the doors marked staff. Yeahhh.
After that I ate lunch with a fellow intern and then we went to this Making the Most Out of Your Internship kind of thing. I felt bad because I was that person who was blowing their nose the entire time. But it was cool. The panelists were people who had been interns before and knew what we all experienced before. So they spoke, then it went into a Q+A session. This was followed by a networking session.
Let's just say that I hate the world networking. I prefer the word making connections. Networking just seems so slimy to me, like using people to get ahead in your own carer. Connections and making friends. That's what I'm all about. I know the rest of the world refers to it as networking, but just the word in general, I don't like. But I met some very nice people here, so that was enjoyable. Then I came back and was all done with my internship basically.
Now on to this morning. Wow, so today I woke up feeling terrible again. I was internally debating on whether or not to come like 20 times. I decided to go. Then we got to the metro and got on the train. We waited for like 10 minutes and didn't go anywhere. Then they told us the metro was out of service and we all needed to get off. So by this time, there was a lot of people on the platform and we were all sardines. But eventually they moved the train and got the next on pulled up. We got on that train and eventually made it to my stop. But I was like 15 minutes late.
The weird part was after we got off the metro, there was a lot of police, an ambulence and a lot of police cars. Then there was this guy who was sitting on a stretcher, with his legs covered, and was apparently handcuffed. You see a lot of interesting things in D.C. But that is it for now.

Catching up yet again
Alright, so this is Thursday, Friday and today, Saturday.
Thursday--Thursday wasn't the best day all week, internship wise. I did the press clips for the day, which was fun. But then I messed up and printed them single sided instead of double sided, so I had to do that all over again and print them double sided. I felt bad about that. Then I got to fold some letters and we had CRS training. CRS training was kind of interesting, because we learned how to use the Library of Congress website. It has some very useful information. The worst part of my day was when I got poured on walking to the metro, because I was silly and didn't have my umbrella in my purse.
But the best part of my day? I was able to go see my senators, for coffee with the senators. It was really great! They answered questions and heard complaints. Minus the waking up early, it was mega fun.
Friday-- Yesterday I finished a constituent letter. The intern coordinator said it wasn't too bad for a first letter, so that's okay. Friday was great because we got to get out at 3pm :) Folded some more letters and edited my constituent letter. Then I got to go to a press thing for all of the communications director/press directors. It was mega awesome. I really hope I get to do more of that. Then we went out to eat at this awesome place later at night. It was good.
Saturday--Today we went to Georgetown Cupcakes. It was mega delicious. I shall post some pictures of that tomorrow. I'm starting to get a cold/sore throat, so that's why this is so short. But I will make sure to post pictures later of the deliciousness that is Georgetown Cupcakes. They have their own tv show on TLC.

Wednesdays are the best days :)
Today I went to a hearing entitled "Operation Fast and Furious: Reckless Decisions, Tragic Outcomes." It was mega legit. There was CNN, CSPAN and all the big news studios. You can check out some websites about it here. It was very sad and after I write my 5 page paper on it, I will add that on here. Or you can google "Fast and Furious + DC" or "Brian Terry DC" But it is too late now, so I am just telling you I went. There just aren't enough hours in the day.

You can see my roommate's head on the right hand corner for a bit. But I'm too short :P So that was how I spent 2 1/2 hours of my day. We left before panel 3 because that's how long the first two panels went.
Then for class we had to go talk to our representatives. I decided to go to my hometown and my schools. My hometown's office was kind of rude and didn't offer me any help. I had to ask for a house pass. Then I went to my school's office. They were very friendly and said I could come back in an hour to talk to my congressman. So we went to lunch and I came back.
Lo and behold I got to talk to him. We had a very nice chat about my school. My congressman's wife went there, so he used to pick her up for dates in her dorm. That was mega nice. I haven't even met my congressman that I work for yet.
Then we walked to the white house. 
It was really far but mega fun. Until my feet hurt walking back. And I tripped over the curb getting into the car. Then I went to Chipotle for dinner. It was a delightful day!
OH! And some good news....I will be attending the "What You Do Matters: A Leadership Summit on Propaganda, Hate Speech, and Civic Engagement" at the Holocaust Museum for three days.

Life is Good
You know that feeling when you enter your work or do some activity that you love? Every single time I walk up the hill from the metro, I get to see the Capitol. This is my ohmygoshilovemylife feeling. The center for our nation's politics is literally across the street from where I intern. It takes my breath away every time.
So today, we started off with CapCor training, which is our constituent mail letter system. It's pretty confusing but after this training, I feel a lot better about it. The interns and I who were doing it were all late there though. It was pretty far away walking. That was how my morning started. Then we went back and I had to copy and pdf some articles. The adobe is too old and I couldn't
figure out how to combine pdfs. So that was like 20 minutes struggling. At least i know how to make copies. I'm pretty awesome at that.
Then I attempted to go hear Donald Rumsfeld speak. They have these intern lecture series with a lot of great speakers. But since making the pdfs took so long, I didn't get there a half hour early. So we met some interns who got turned away because it was full. Apparently one person arrived an hour early and still didn't make it in. You'd think they'd do it in a larger space since he's so popular. So I was kind of bummed about that. But Friday is the past NYT Opinion's Editor, so I'm totally going to hear her speak. Then I ate lunch with some of one of my interns friends.
Something that I found particularly interesting that someone said. We were just sitting there eating when one intern said, "we look like a college catalogue." So I looked around, and it was so right. We had one Mexican, one African-American, one Asian and me, the Caucasian. At school and mainly in my hometown, almost everyone is Caucasian. It's so invigorating to be here in DC. I've met so many different people of different races and backgrounds. I don't even give it a second thought when I ate with these people. It really opened my eyes to how diverse Washington DC is. And I absolutely loved it.
Finally, I finished my memo for the Veterans sexual abuse briefing. I learned how to do press clippings. I folded some letters. Then I went home. So today was officially my first time going the wrong way on the train. I think I wasn't thinking very clearly and it stinks because I waited forever for this metro train, it was mega crowded, and then I realized I wasn't supposed to be in China town. But we went to this pretty sweet Chicago style pizza place. Best deep dish pizza i have ever had. And I've had a lot of Chicago style pizza. And then played some frisbee in the dark. So as this title says, "Life is good."

So we met some interns who got turned away because it was full. Apparently one person arrived an hour early and still didn't make it in. You'd think they'd do it in a larger space since he's so popular. So I was kind of bummed about that. But Friday is the past NYT Opinion's Editor, so I'm totally going to hear her speak. Then I ate lunch with some of one of my interns friends.
Something that I found particularly interesting that someone said. We were just sitting there eating when one intern said, "we look like a college catalogue." So I looked around, and it was so right. We had one Mexican, one African-American, one Asian and me, the Caucasian. At school and mainly in my hometown, almost everyone is Caucasian. It's so invigorating to be here in DC. I've met so many different people of different races and backgrounds. I don't even give it a second thought when I ate with these people. It really opened my eyes to how diverse Washington DC is. And I absolutely loved it.
Finally, I finished my memo for the Veterans sexual abuse briefing. I learned how to do press clippings. I folded some letters. Then I went home. So today was officially my first time going the wrong way on the train. I think I wasn't thinking very clearly and it stinks because I waited forever for this metro train, it was mega crowded, and then I realized I wasn't supposed to be in China town. But we went to this pretty sweet Chicago style pizza place. Best deep dish pizza i have ever had. And I've had a lot of Chicago style pizza. And then played some frisbee in the dark. So as this title says, "Life is good."

"Made a wrong turn once or twice"
Wow, okay. So not writing over the weekend made me forget everything we did. Thank goodness for pictures and cameras! Since it is late and I want to go to bed, this will be a blog in pictures :)
Saturday we went to the Air and Space Museum in Virginia. It was pretty sweet. Going there, we went the wrong way at least once.
There were A LOT of planes there.
This plane dropped the first bomb on Hiroshima.
This one was my favorite.
We were able to go up in the control tower thing. Since this was once an actual airport hanger, it was really cool. For someone who isn't too into planes, it was still pretty neat. But I won't bore you with more pictures of planes. There were a lot of them. If you want to really see more, feel free to ask me to look at them. So that was basically Saturday. We watched some movies afterward, but I think that was about it.
Sunday was really sweet. We went to the National Museum of American History. We drove around for like an hour looking for a parking spot. Traffic and parking is nuts. But it was so worth it!
Here are some of the really cool things you can see there:
You can also see: the first teddy bear, where they signed the treaty for the civil war (furniture), Michael Jackson's hat, the flag that inspired The Star Spangled Banner, where they had the sit-in (the counter), as well as lots of other awesome artifacts. It was mega awesome.
So that brings us to today!
My internship...started off by looking up news for today. So just browsing about what was going on in politics. Then I got assigned a constituent letter. I had to write about Utah's natural resources and how they are being made into national preserved areas. That took a lot of time. But it was still fun, since I like to write. The hardest part is probably researching it though and finding the right words.
Then I got assigned to go to a hearing. It was about Veterans Affairs and Sexual Assault. It was 2 hours and kind of depressing, not going to lie. So I got out of work late, kind of around 6pm. So my friend asked me if I wanted to go see one of the bands that play on the Capitol. I figured that would be super cool, since it was last time I did that. So I went to dinner at this great salad place.
Then we save the Navy Band...they played country and fiddle music. But it was still totally awesome. The 8th grade school trip kids were all dancing around to it. That was pretty great.
And of course I got some beautiful capitol pictures :)
Then we were going to go see the Jefferson Monument, since I haven't seen that one, but the streets in DC are tricky so we made a wrong turn and eventually gave up. We still have 8 weeks. That is why the title is from the P!nk song...these past three days we have made a lot of wrong turns. But that just seems to make life more interesting :)
